Hollies follies

Let’s see, there is, Daphne and Darla, Delia and Diana. Delilah and Diedra, Darlene and Dharma.

All of which are vibrant ladies with the utmost southern charm, although originally they resided along the English countryside.

Delilah would say “Why Darling, its those of us adapting the fastest, that have the most charm.”

“And, I would add, with sugar in my words and the highest integrity, what Miss Delilah says is absolutely true” Dharma quipped

“Yes dearie, it is rather true. And, if I might say, I rather like it here. There is no other place in which a dame could watch the neighbor, a D name I think… shocking, I know but even though peculiar as it is, she is all but 65 years of age wearing that skimpy bikini like an 18 year old in the front yard. ” Daphne boasted.

Diedra wasted no time chiming in, “Mmhm, that’s right”

Darlene waved a pink petal, “Ladies, ladies” she scoffed “Now, I do remember that other fellow down the way, you know the one, he drives that ridiculous barge of a truck.”

Diana squeeled in delight, “OH yes! That’s the neighbor down the street who has confused that barge for one of those toy Tonka trucks or has simply mistaken it for a tractor”

Darla snickers, “I do believe, that, is what we call a right fine Hill Billy, with those mounds of dirt he uses for a parking pad. If you couldn’t have guessed by that accord, then I highly encourage you to notice the life-sized plastic, halloween skele-a-dog perched over his drive. I am guessing he doesn’t realize the gulf is another 500 miles, due South by the looks of the large cut out boasting Salt life next to the bone dog.”

Daphne but in with a mission, “My God, I swear to the baby Jesus that I have wished that dog thing that looks like recycled garbage pails would launch itself silly in a thunderstorm, but you know as the heavens have it, that hideous thing lives on like a Celine Dion song.”

Diana sang out “or, a lambchops song… You remember the one… The song that doesn’t….”

Dharma interrupted her with a vengeance, “Now Diana, you just stop that nonsense right now, no need to punish us all night long “

“I think that’s quite true, let’s not take ourselves down that God forsaken path dear. Now, let’s get back to what we just couldn’t enjoy if we were living among an English country side”

Darlene waved her petals, “Well, I don’t know about you but I just can’t fathom their would be those weird postal clerks who can’t seem to organize themselves in a way to deliver all packages at once, let alone back their vans into trees. I mean, it’s no wonder Frank the post oak wasn’t mowed down by that rotund man with a plumber crack. I just know he has a scar. “

Daphne, “OH, you mean those jungle people, the ones from the Amazon.”

Deidra clicked her tongue, “That’s the one”

Diana smirked, “Do you think they are really from the Amazon or could it possibly be they come from that junk yard down the street, you know the one where Chevy trucks go to die and dogs find themselves chained to their side steps, what ever is that blokes name? “

“I couldn’t tell you his actual name, Mister fat asster is what I think to call him, but I prefer to be a lady and call him junkyard Dan, although, I am quite aware that isn’t his Christian name, but then again who cares.” Diedra said

Daphne laughed, “OH dearie, You said it best! Nevermore were truer words than who cares. Such the dullard that man is sporting around in a jeep like he is a woodsy fellow to then trade it for one of those loud, two wheeled horse things they call hogs.”

“Tacky” Delia said “It’s just tacky. Thank the Good lord he doesn’t live next door, at least all we have to worry about is staring at the back end of that old broads pruned up bottom, aimed to the sky like she has mistaken herself for the Greek goddess of rain”

Dharma shook her petaled head, “Now, I do believe we have spoken our days gospel. I can’t imagine the characters in the countryside being any more colorful than the likes of these bumbling donkeys. My cousin, Donna said all that ever passes her by is a heard of sheep or the occasional family on holiday. “

The Hollies all sighed in unison, shaking their beautiful little heads together.

“Well, I suppose we ladies should retire for this evening, I mean a lady sure needs her beauty sleep. Especially in this dastardly heat.” Daphne said

“Good idea Daphne, I am quite tired and I have had my eye on that Wisteria bush over there.”

The Hollies all giggled together as the last of the sun faded. Fireflies blinked their lights against the deepest shades of night as the moon rose high across the southern sky.

The Southern Oracle

Sixth painting from the series Southern Oracle
Oil on panel 24×36
Mandi Mk Fowler

I don’t exactly like to divulge the reasons or meaning behind a series or specific painting. In my opinion, I find it crippling to the viewer and diminishing to the work.

Several years ago I attended a concert for one of my most beloved female artists. I had listened, cherished and held close the lyrics close as if they were written specifically for me. I carried these musical treasures as if they had the ability to save me from every monster in the closet. It had been a long journey from the time I was 15 all the way to my 30s. In those years that music was exceptionally powerful and in some ways spiritual to me, because it was those words so eloquently written and sang with beautifully chilling vibration that literally held me through some very difficult years.

I felt this strange closeness to it, a connection. I was beyond excited to actually go see her live, let alone have some kind of deeply enlightening experience.

It definitely was, but not exactly in the way I hoped for. You see, it went wrong when she decided to explain every song she ever wrote, why and what she was going through. In those moments, it was like she had just belted me in the face while belching out everything I ever thought about those lyrical chords was all bunk.

Nothing, and I mean nothing was at all what I had believed it to be or mean. In one swift move she had completely ruined this savior I had clung to, this understanding kinship and spiritual meaning.

I learned then, that although it was interesting to know, I wished she had kept that to herself. The music was only subjective when I didn’t know anything other than what the universe wanted to say through it.

I was so upset that for awhile I put her music away and let everything she babbled about mull out of my brain. It took some time before I returned to it but when I did there were still a few songs that she had out right obliterated. I couldn’t hear anything other than her marriage dissolving or a stalking fan. Which I can assure you was never anything I heard when I had found refuge and solace in those albums.

Therefore, I choose to keep my deepest emotions, thoughts and secrets about my series or even individual paintings to myself for the sheer fact that if there is something hidden in them that’s meant just for you then I wouldn’t want to diminish that by telling you anything that might taint that view.

I have never wanted to paint anything that was merely static or white noise for a wall. In fact, I have strived hard to paint things I felt were moving or powerful. Some viewers might not experience that but they wouldn’t choose it because it matched a great set of French curtains or some HGTV make over. I wanted to create something that would speak without anyone saying a word.

I wanted them and hope they elicit a secret to be told only to you, the viewer and that somehow it has a bigger meaning than even the viewer would want to share.

Art should be loved with great conviction so that it never bores or tires. It should always speak to you.

If it doesn’t, then it’s just wall filler.

Sometimes, I like to share my direction but after that it’s up to the viewer to decide, and, I find that more prophetic than a set of tarot cards and a mystic reader.

The only thing anyone really needs to know is that every painting, no matter the subject matter, size or media has a piece of me in it.

Usually, it’s the tiniest of details, or hidden symbolism that no one knows but me, but nevertheless they are there. In some ways, I have often thought they took on a life of their own. They occasionally feel as if they breath in when I turn my back and I know without a shadow of a doubt that late at night, after the lights have been turned down I hear them talking amongst each other as if they are bestest of friends.

I suppose in some ways, they are.

A poppy seed

Mandi Mk Fowler, Stained glass mosaic on wood. 2020

It’s amazing how something so tiny as a poppy seed can mull around in your thoughts like sugar in a tea pitcher, spinning around until finally it dissolves into you. One tiny little seed. One tiny little thought.

Often, as a child we discovery many things be it through books, movies or something other. It was then that something so powerful struck me unknowingly and it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized how important that one line in a movie would become. It was my poppy seed, and the prophecy of something to come.

If only I had known then, that it was going to be what it became, perhaps I would have thought on it harder, but that, isn’t the law of the universe.

Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child you have stolen, for my will is as strong as yours and my kingdom as great.”

You have no power over me!”

These few, but precious words. It’s a reminder that in weakness I allowed a single person to take my innocence (the babe) and use it like it was theirs to keep, and although that fight lasted another fifteen years, it is finally this moment today that I have taken back what is mine. This person, has no power over me and never did.

The journey has been a labyrinth of wrong turns, obstacles and mistakes. However, it was never about those erroneous hurdles I had to face but more or yet about discovering myself.

It was about finding my own power inside me and letting my voice be heard. I have nothing to prove to anyone and nothing to lose that anyone can take.

And, although I have to remind myself constantly of those words, it is then that I remember I hold the power over me.

I have the power to be whatever I want, without barriers. In that, it’s the most freedom I have felt since I was a little girl watching that one movie over and over in the VCR until I feared it might burn up inside the machine from over play.

The universe is always listening, planting seeds and letting them grow. It’s only when those precious seeds grow, we finally see what it was all planted for.

Your invited to high tea. Where, the sugarcane field. Time, now

One could assume many things go on between the tight weaves of growing sugar cane. Although none is necessarily sweet than what exists other than the combination of mingling mice mixed with the occasional dog or cat making their way through the labyrinth of wildly growing stalks.

I’d like to say it’s a sinister thing, and some could say it is, but in reality, it’s more pathetic than anything frightening.

I can’t say for sure how long it has been taking place nor the exact moment the invite was sent, let alone what paper it was printed on, but nevertheless, the devil himself has called high tea in the heart of the sugarcane fields.

I can’t truly say if it’s just this one field or if by some paranormal occurrence it’s every sugarcane field, but I can say there is at least one and the Devil resides there as consistently as the moon rises at dusk.

You might even be asking why the devil would even think of such a thing? Hightea? Why?

Honestly, I can’t say for sure since he doesn’t usually take out personal ads with an explanation of his interests anymore than writing a blog about what and why he reeks havoc. It’s quite peculiar being that the devil has a sweet taste for catfish and shit, but maybe he occasionally enjoys a little loose leaf.

I presume the display of high tea in this round was a choice way of being the ultimate cat to his unknowing mousey prey.

So, with all that being said, I can say with absolute, I wasn’t really surprised by this hellish little party, yet more like utterly amused, just as a frightened child might be upon discovering the monster under the bed was only a stuffed toy or misplaced shoe.

In my mind attending high tea with the queen and having mud smeared all over your hands whilst wearing a dirty dress with knotted and disheveled hair would be far more frightening than this little display of broken down China and tepid tea.

It’s really not frightening, unless watching a blind man sewing a quilt with sticks is the kind of torment that scares you.

You see, the devil is an aging man who has lost his charm long ago, along with any good looks or hair on his head. Simply put, he is nothing more than an old, washed up, sissyish man wearing poorly tailored suit, faded from the sun and dingey from the garage sale box he plucked it from. His companion, and current mouse Richard, is a man that prides himself in looking like Johnny Bravo while pretending he still thinks he is as glamorous as he was twenty years ago, when in fact he is as washed up as the devil that sits across that rickety little table from him.

Richard Cranium is every bit the sad little man who had the unfortunate slight of having one of those lying mirrors, you know the kind, they are the very ones where they tell you look younger, thinner and more beautiful than you are and if memory serves I believe there was a famous one in the fairytale Snow White.

Should the rose color be removed from the glass, I am afraid Richard would see a 43 year old man staring back with oversized dentures, hair plugs and too much sun while wearing a teenagers clothing. Poor Richard could then see the value of his time spent in a gym because he has made himself appear as an upside down pear, inflated at the top with nothing below but a stem.

You might think this tea party would be serving up delicious treats, but instead, the table is bare and the devil so rudly sips his tea from a chipped cup with his pinky out.

He laughs to himself watching his mouse believe he is merely there for his own enjoyment instead of understanding he is the scone the devil wants to so hungerly devour. The devil watches Richard with mocking eyes, wearing a shirt so small he can’t even button the last five buttons of his overly starched dress shirt. The devil snickers at his untucked half ajar shirt he paired with white washed jeans so torn and ripped they looked as if they had been eaten by a weedeater only moments before arriving.

Richard once again is out of place, even in a sugarcane field with the devil. He feigns a laugh and tried to make small talk but falls short upon discovering the tea has gone cold and his teeth are entirely too large for the dainty teacup provided for him. The devil grins as if he is but Richards greatest friend and gives him the suggestion to seek advice from the big bad wolf, “Perhaps Dick, you should ask that old wolf how to properly navigate oversized chompers around the fragile edge of a tea cup.” he laughs and of course Richard laughs too afraid to admit he was just insulted by the one he believes is his friend.

Instead, he pretends its all in good fun because ultimately Richard is a coward with no intention of ever asking that big, bad, scary wolf a single thing.

You see my friends, Richard is, and always will be, the joke, the ass end and butt the devil in a crappy suit uses for his own mirthful pleasure. Nothing in either of them is glamorous or frightening but yet merely pathetic.

The moral of this story is, well, there isn’t one but if there were it would be that Richard Cranium is nearing the point that the devil may decide he looks like a scone and eat him.

A call to the universe

My demand is as powerful as my heart is true as I have not faced the dragon without cause, nor did I slay it with regret.

For it is I, that stands before the universe with nothing to lose and it is I, that demands for its power.

As it has been set right with it’s defeat, it must be set right in all things, for this can not be the way and resolve.

The moon yeilds to the morning sun as the sun yeilds the moon to dusk.

For I have slayed the dragon and fought the battle, give to me the right that comes with victory.

Hear my call and hear my heart for it is now that I stand before you and ask of you to restore what should have always been.

I am the light and I am the way.

My purpose is great and my destiny is certain.

With reckless abandon, I have climbed mountains, fought the beasts unyielding storms and walked the path of broken glass for one reason.

For my purpose is great and my destiny is certain.

I have come to slay the dragon with fierce conviction in my heart and savagery in my sword all so to take back what you have wrongfully stolen.

For it was never yours take, nor was it given freely.

It is mine, and belongs to me.

For it is with everything I am to become, this is my want and this is my strongest desire.

For it is in these moments, these last few strands of time that I am here to cut out your tongue.

It is there you have hidden my innocence behind the oily slick of your mouth and it is now that it will fall between your blood soaked lips , for it was never lost but stolen.

A pearl of great price, lay at your feet, untainted.

For it belongs to me, and is mine in every ounce of my essence and in every grain of my spirit.

I’m taking it back. For it is now that I am whole.

As for you dragon, empty and black that you are.

It should be known as I stand above you, you have no power over me.

There shall be no light to illuminate your path and there shall be no journey effortless. Your time has come to face the darkness alone.

There is no one to come to your call and no one to fill the void and the blackness shall rain upon you like a shroud, swallowing you into its abyss.

It is there, as you sit alone, you will understand the meaning of a true nightmare.

Wander

I have lived a thousand lives inside these twisted tales as they have weaved themselves in existence. Where has one story ended and another began? But, if only I could tell you, for that I do not know. I believe the transformation was slow and steady, but so subtle that not even the curiosity of watching eyes could see.

My breath leaves me a little with each pause and for a minute I began to wander.

Humanity’s Funeral

We as humans have often experienced the moment, at a funeral, where everyone is gathering and says, “It shouldn’t be a funeral to get us all together.”

We all knod and agree, but yet we go on about our lives until another death happens, and another funeral comes to pass. It’s true, things happen in our daily lives where we have become all too busy to simply say hello to even a neighbor next door, let alone gather with our friends and family. We ignore our thoughts at the funeral and go on about our way thinking, I’ll do it tomorrow.

However, with all that said and in the midst of wondering myself about humanity on a whole, we have faced the ultimate funeral, covid – 19.

The entire world is mourning and yet even from a distance, albeit the media never shows this, people of all walks of life are banding together. Russians to Italians, America and the likes.

We read to our children on social media and teach school from the internet. People are singing from balconies, calling and checking on their families and sharing what supplies they have.

They want us to believe the worst possible things about our situation, but the truth is, even in the worst we as humans have reached out to hold each other’s hand. There isn’t a certain religion, race or belief system unaffected. It’s all of us. Young and old, men and women and that’s at its simplest form.

I have faith in the human existence because, even when there is the proverbial funeral, we have all showed up to gather. We have all made sacrifices to save each other and that means that covid 19 is not the enemy that killed us, it’s the thing that made us stronger.

Today, is one more day that is closer to the moment we can put this behind us. The question is, can we hold on to each other when it’s gone.

Let’s hope, that we can.

The power of thought

The power of thought is not merely some idea that exists inside an old hippies cedar trunk to be dismissed and forgotten. Dr. Emoto proved the idea, the energy of thought and use of words through his studies with molecular water crystals. But, if you don’t believe me, I empower you to see for yourself. It’s simple, take two bottles of water, label one with words like I love you and your beautiful. Talk to it. The second one, use negative words such as your ugly and I hate you. Say those words to it. Let it sit for a little while and then have someone taste them without knowing which is positive and which is negative. The taste alone will prove what the eye can’t see without special microscopes.

If you are wondering what all this has to do with life’s current situation, then let me explain. Our minds are bigger than our bodies. It posses a divine connection to our creator. Simply put, by using that positive frequency we can tap into our ability to be fed directly from God. Healing, health and life exists in the place where positivity thrives.

Fear breeds more fear, anxiety, greed and hatred. It taints our bodies just like a virus can taint our bodies with a parasite. It weakens our immune system, and leaves us more susceptible to earth bound illnesses.

What’s important right now, is focusing on the positive things. Happiness, joy, love and the very thought that you are strong, healthy and will be healed. You are safe.

I believe that when we keep our mind connected to God, just like Peter held fast to Jesus’s hand he didn’t sink, it was only when he let go that he started to find himself sinking into the depths.

Keep your mind clear. Keep it positive. It spreads faster than any virus. It heals hearts and brings hope to darkened corners. We are more powerful in numbers. When our minds join together in love and the belief that we will be taken care of, we will.

The devil is a small little man in bad clothing

Throughout history, the devil has worn many faces. A face with a hulking, red body full of muscles, dark black hair and a trendy mustache. He is has been painted to look like a monster worthy of an Oscar for, Most Terrifying in a Visual Appearance. The Bible thumpers get on this boat with tales of his looks to scare children into going to sleep, having moral aptitudes or simply being a good little boy or girl. What they neglect to say is that the very man they have so vehemently pointed out as a demon of the worst nature, is the same man that sits in a pew next to them in church.

Let me tell you, the one thing those zealots got right was, the devil does indeed, drive a Cadillac. A black escalade to be precise. He isn’t menacing, hulking or massive nor his his face incredibly frightening. He isn’t red bodied either. In fact, he resembles an older Johnny Bravo with the appearance of more hair than he began with and a little to coifed. His teeth are a just touch big and way too white. He seems to forget that he is protaying himself as forty something and not an 18 year old by the ways of his white washed, skinny jeans that no man of stature should purchase with the sheer amount of holes torn precariously in the thigh and shin.

He smiles way more than anyone wants to see his over sized chompers and walks as if a corn cob or perhaps a hair brush has been inserted in his ass, causing him to use anal kegals to keep the item lodged inside.

This smallish devil enjoys charading around parking lots, waving to his pretend friends as if he had any friends although no one is looking. Well, now there is always the one guy who has more guilt than an actual convict and feels compelled to wave back but ultimately no one cares. Why is that? you might ask. That’s an easy answer. It’s because he looks like a cartoon character and not even one that is notable like scooby doo or mickey mouse.

Can you possibly imagine the world where parents will finally give up the shtick of the devil having a demon face and toss it out for the more fluidly neutral one like:OK little Mikey, you better go to bed early or the smallish, mid life crisis devil with over sized teeth and hair plugs just might grin you to death.

In my opinion, I would have thought the scarier version was more effective. But, I suppose the devil has become more binary these days. Masculinity has faded into the wind along with landlines and boob tubes.

This is all informational, and in good nature. The next time you fear the devil, you should faintly remember, he is just a smallish guy, in bad clothes.
